Disable or remove any local copies of fonts when the mockup phase ends.Converted web fonts usually have messy names in menus. Some woff files didn’t work, in those rare cases the corresponding ttf worked fine–you might need to dig into the stylesheets to find the url.Converting fonts to a different container format makes them work correctly. Web TrueType fonts often won’t show in menus because their name-tables have been munged to discourage copying/theft.“ Good Artists Copy Great Artists Steal” wasn’t about shoplifting. Any file on the web can be copied, in fact every file viewed on the web already is a copy. Having those files makes converting fonts for comping easy, but it’s just as simple to download the files with a web browser. This means the font files can be downloaded and hosted on the web server alongside other assets like images or stylesheets. Standard-level accounts allow for self-hosted webfont projects. There are a number of tools for converting fonts, but the following web sites work well enough that I didn’t bother downloading an app. To use any web font for comping in desktop apps, just convert the ttf or woff file to otf, then use it like you would any normal font. Web fonts are normally provided in three file formats, two of which, TrueType *.TTF and Web Open Font Format *.WOFF, are easily converted back to standard TrueType or OpenType fonts. The thing is, with a little knowledge of how web fonts work, using those typefaces in desktop apps is quite easy. The few designers I know who’ve tried it found it restrictive and expensive. Monotype’s SkyFonts service is a nice idea, I guess, but their usage terms seem impractical and unrealistic. Convoluted, fragile workflows only create anxeity, they don’t foster creativity. Designers should be free to play and experiment with typefaces without worrying about running out of time or exceeding a monthly usage cap. There’s no way to anticipate the twists and turns a creative project will take. This will tell your desktop GitHub app that you want it to check W0ng’s Font Directory for updates any time it opens. When that’s done, go back to W0ng’s Google Font directory page and press “Clone in Mac” (or “Clone in Win”). When you open it up, it’ll ask you to create a GitHub account. To do this, get the GitHub app for Mac or Windows and install it. The only problem is that Google’s fonts are updated constantly, so you want to ensure that you’re receiving all the updates. Now, you could just go there, press download, and copy all the files into your computer’s Fonts directory. Luckily for us, W0ng created this Github repository of the entire Google Font directory in one convenient folder. Skyfonts is looking to profit by making Google’s free fonts available offline, but there’s no sense in paying them to do something you can do easily (and freely) yourself. Recently, Google and Skyfonts announced a new tool/service to automatically sync Google Fonts to your desktop. Until now, it’s been difficult to download all the Google fonts to your hard drive so you can experiment in your desktop design apps. Since they’re all open licensed, they’re also a great way for budding designers to build up their font collection knowing that nobody is going to come ‘round asking for royalties. SkyFonts is a freeware that makes the new fonts from the Google Fonts directory available to its users, on Windows PC. Nice, huh?) It’s a huge library of free, open-licensed fonts that give web designers a huge new palette to work with, going beyond the same old tired “ web safe” fonts. Users of Google Fonts can now work with free, desktop versions of Google Web fonts accessed through Monotypes patent-pending SkyFonts technology, which enables cloud-based access to OpenType.
